Marriages in Italy continue to drop (-6.7% in the first eight months of this year over the same time in 2023). Religious marriages are experiencing a significant decline (-8.2%). However, separations (-8.4%) and divorces (-3.3%) are also declining, while unions between same-sex partners are increasing (+7.3% in 2023, compared to the previous year). Of these, 56.1% are unions of men. Istat includes the photograph in their report "Marriages, civil unions, separations, and divorces" for 2023. Last year, 6 out of 10 weddings were celebrated with a civil ceremony, which was consistent with the previous year's numbers; the particularly high share of civil marriages observed in 2020 (71.1%) was thus an exception, caused by anti-Covid containment measures that primarily affected religious celebrations. The number of second or subsequent marriages continues to rise: 44,320 were reported in 2023, the highest total ever. Additionally, today you marry at a later date than in the past.
