Italy and Japan are collaborating to develop a new military fighter jet. Guido Crosetto, Minister of Defense, and Takeshi Iwaya, Japanese Foreign Minister, signed the ACSA ("Acquisition and Cross-Service Agreement") in Rome to improve bilateral cooperation between the two countries. The collaboration focuses on a sixth-generation fighter jet, with the United Kingdom also involved in its design. The GCAP program is a combat aircraft system that works in tandem with other military assets such as unmanned systems and satellites. An "intelligent" network will connect all system elements, utilizing dedicated cloud architecture, artificial intelligence, and next-generation data links. For Italy, the new aircraft are scheduled to replace the Eurofighter fleet beginning in 2035, with an operating life that extends into the late twentieth century. Leonardo, BAE Systems (UK), and Mitsubishi (Japan) are the leading corporations in their respective countries. Italian companies such as MBDA Italia, Elettronica, and Avio GE are also expected to participate.
