One in every two Italians would vote for a return to nuclear power. As many as 79% of respondents regard the new company established by Enel, Ansaldo, and Leonardo to evaluate the atom of the future as "an appropriate response to the increasing demand for electricity in the country", provided that it "maintains the production chain in the territory". However, only one in ten individuals is aware of the most modern technologies now being explored, beginning with the so-called SMRs, or Small modular reactors, which are regarded as one of the most promising - according to various insiders - in terms of possible cost savings and excellent safety. In summary, these are the findings of a survey conducted by Swg. According to the SWG report, the newfound appeal of nuclear power in Italy is primarily driven by three factors: a growing demand for electricity that will not be able to be met by renewables alone; the need to become increasingly independent of foreign supplies and thus more resilient from an energy point of view; and the need to protect companies, particularly energy-intensive ones, to ensure their competitiveness with solutions capable of counteracting the greenhouse Among the electors of the center-right majority, 63% are in favor of the atom, while the opposition's support falls to 42%.
