The Piepoli Institute conducted an opinion survey (3,500 online interviews) on seven countries bordering the Mediterranean to better understand the issue of the centrality of Rome and Italy, in "our" sea. The three countries of the "Northern Mediterranean" chosen were Italy, France and Greece for a total of over 130 million inhabitants, those of the "Southern Mediterranean" were Algeria, Morocco, Egypt and Tunisia which today are populated by just under 200 million inhabitants in rapid expansion. The questions concerning the strategic and centrality of Italy and Rome in the Mediterranean record, in all cases, a high level of recognition. When asked about the strategic geographical position of Italy and Rome in the Mediterranean, the answer is largely positive: Tunisia 88%, Algeria 87%, France 84%, Egypt 83%, Morocco 81%, Greece 77%. For Italian interviewees, the percentage is 77%. On the statement that the city of Rome is an important economic center of reference for Europe, the answer is very positive. Higher percentages for Greece (74%) and Tunisia (71%), compared to the high percentages of Algeria (68%), Egypt (68%) and France (66%). The question, then, on the relevance of Rome for the economic development of the Mediterranean sees the interviewees agree on this statement with very high percentages ranging from 72% in Greece (the highest) to 64% in Egypt (the lowest). As for the areas in which Italy stands out the most, there is a general chorus on three fields: culture, art and tourism, with a prevalence of the latter aspect especially for the three countries of the "southern Mediterranean" involved in the survey. On the adjectives that describe Rome there is almost unanimity in defining it as a historic city, rich in culture, tourist, beautiful and fascinating. An interesting and dramatically topical question was asked about "Rome and the development of peace in the world": Tunisia and Egypt recorded the highest percentage (64%) in considering the capital as an important city for this goal. For Italian interviewees, the percentage is 53%.
