During the heavy rains that fell in mid-October, thousands of tons of mud, branches, and debris accumulated in the canals running through the city of Bologna, which now need to be cleared. It's a long and tough job: 250 trucks have already been packed, but many more will be required to thoroughly clear the waterways. It is expected that the work will be completed around mid-December, most likely just before Christmas. Until then, the canals will stay dry. Bologna's network of canals was built in the Middle Ages to provide water to the city due to the lack of a river crossing it. The Reno Canal, the Savena, and the Navile are the most important, but the Ravone and Meloncello have also caused significant issues during recent floods. In Bologna, dozens of streets, hundreds of cellars, garages, and many buildings' first floors were flooded. A large portion of the city lost power. Thousands of people have been evacuated, and the damage is estimated to be around 10 million euros.
