With 133.6 million arrivals and 447.2 million overnight stays in 2023, Italian tourism not only beat the previous absolute record set in 2019 (131.4 million arrivals and 436.7 million overnight stays), but it also surpassed the dark years of the epidemic. There was a 12.8% increase in visitor flows in comparison to 2022. 2023 is also characterized by the robust recovery of the foreign component, which has re-established its presence to account for over half of the total tourist demand (52.4%). Foreign customers were 234.2 million, compared to 213 million Italian tourists. Veneto is the most popular tourist region (with over 72 million visitors), followed by Trentino-Alto Adige, which includes the autonomous provinces of Bolzano/Bozen (36.1 million visitors) and Trento (19.1 million). This is followed by Tuscany, Lazio, and Lombardy (all with over 40 million visitors). The capital is confirmed as the top tourism attraction in 2023, with around 37.3 million visitors. Venice ranks second with 12.6 million visitors, followed by Milan (12.5 million) and Florence (8.9 million).
