Of every €100 spent by consumers on fresh agricultural products, farmers see only €7 in profit. When the supply chain extends to processed products, involving additional steps from agriculture to industry, profits shrink to €1.50. Just to provide a comparison, the amount for trade and transport is 13.1 euros. Low compensation is the primary reason for protests by Italian farmers, who also face increasing risks from "catastrophic events" which are becoming more frequent and severe as a result of climate change. The most affected sectors, fruit, dairy, and grains are expected to incur expenditures of roughly one billion euros this year. A large figure, but significantly lower than 2022's €6 billion loss caused by a devastating drought. As a result, agricultural value-added dropped by 3.3% in real terms in 2023. Conversely, the food industry saw a 16% increase in value-added compared to the previous year.
