Returning home for the Christmas holidays is expected to be a significant drain on the pockets of Italians who are compelled to travel from north to south to see relatives and friends. Domestic airline ticket costs for the holiday season have already skyrocketed. Individuals who are in the process of purchasing an "economy" class ticket today to travel to Italy during the holidays, departing on Saturday, December 21st, and returning on January 6th, and are willing to board at any time (including early in the morning or late in the evening), face costs of €623 for a round trip from Genoa to Catania. The most expensive flights are direct to Sicilian airports: on the same days, it costs at least 445 euros to fly from Trieste to Catania, 412 euros from Florence to Catania, and 402 euros from Bologna to Palermo. However, depending on the flight, this can increase to 1,228 euros. The additional fees levied by airlines for flight-related services cause final prices to skyrocket, resulting in an increase of up to 443% over the basic fares offered to the public. They include hand luggage, seat selection, self-check-in, priority gate access, and security checks, as well as medical insurance coverage and airport parking. "Moving around Italy during the holidays is becoming a luxury for the rich", said the Consumer Association's president.
