The Venice Assize Court sentenced Filippo Turetta to life imprisonment for the murder of Giulia Cecchettin, in a speedy trial thanks to the defense's choice of an abbreviated trial. The sentence, handed down after only five hearings, granted the prosecutor's requests. Turetta, who was present in the courtroom, listened in silence, while the victim's father, Gino Cecchettin, watched the verdict with composure. Giulia, a 22-year-old young woman with dreams of becoming a cartoonist, was brutally murdered on November 11, 2023. Her body was found a week later, scarred by 75 stab wounds inflicted with ferocity. Turetta was arrested in Germany the same day he was found and later extradited to Italy. He was charged with several counts, including voluntary manslaughter aggravated by premeditation and cruelty, as well as kidnapping and stalking. After the sentencing, Gino Cecchettin expressed words of bitterness and despondency, "We have all lost as a society. No one will ever give me Giulia back. I feel neither more relieved nor saddened than yesterday. As a human being I feel defeated, as a dad nothing has changed compared to yesterday or a year ago". An unchanged pain that, however, does not stop his commitment to the future. "The battle against violence continues. It is a path that has to be done as a society, with prevention. I will dedicate myself to the foundation, moving forward trying to save more lives”.
