The usage of automated key boxes (key boxes or smart lockers) for guest check-in is not permitted in tourist accommodations. This was clarified by the Ministry of the Interior in a circular distributed to all prefectures. The ministry has intervened in the matter following the Municipality of Florence's proposal to prohibit key boxes in the Unesco center at the beginning of November. In Venice, the new municipal regulation currently under discussion would prohibit the use of key boxes in the historic center for those who sought to rent to tourists for more than 120 nights annually. The ministry now outlines how the owners of housing facilities, including non-conventional ones, must "provide accommodation exclusively to people with an identity card or other document suitable for certifying their identity". So key boxes are illegal. With the Jubilee approaching and the expansion of B&Bs in residential housing, the goal is to avoid hazards associated with "the possible housing of dangerous people and/or linked to criminal or terrorist organizations".
