Italy is second in Europe for the number of artificial intelligence trials in governmental agencies and first in terms of approved projects. The figure comes from the 2024 Report of the Observatory on Italy's Digital Transformation, which was conducted by Teha (The European House Ambrosetti) Group in collaboration with the IBM Italia Foundation, but it paints a complex picture of lights and shadows in Italy's digital landscape. While Italy has achieved the European record for artificial intelligence projects in the Public Administration, the sixth-best 5G coverage, and the highest share of 48 billion euros allocated to the digital transition among large European countries, there are significant challenges that persist. For example, only 46% of Italian adults possess basic IT skills, the rate of ICT graduates is one of the lowest in Europe (1.5%), and women are underrepresented in the digital sector, with only 16% of the workforce. In terms of citizen digitization, Italy ranks 23rd in Europe, with only 22% of the population having more than basic digital capabilities.
