Following yesterday's public audience, Pope Francis received a new all-electric popemobile, which was provided by Mercedes. Among the revolutionary car's features is a heated seat, which was built for the Pontiff's comfort. The name "popemobile" originated during St. John Paul II's papacy and refers to the Polish Pope's numerous visits. One of the most recognizable images is that of the attack on May 13, 1981, in which Wojtyla was wounded in St. Peter's Square while riding in the papal vehicle, which was then referred to as "the Pope's campagnola." The history of papal automobiles dates back to the early 1900s, but it wasn't until Pius XI in the 1920s that a Pope boarded a car for the first time. Today, the electric popemobile represents a step toward greater sustainability, consistent with Pope Francis' environmental stance.
