Italian cities are getting a makeover thanks to the Saints. Funds and investments are coming in for the main places of worship that the cities on which they rise will also enjoy. The lion's share, of course, this year goes to Rome, which has investments worth a total of €4,306 million in the till for the now imminent Jubilee. A lot of money is also coming to Umbria, where the 800th anniversary of the death of St. Francis is being celebrated. The funds will be used to enhance the region's internal, national and international modes of connection. A small 900,000-euro slice is earmarked for seismic improvements to the bell tower of the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels, one of the symbols of Christianity. €3.7 million are also planned for the garden of St. Francis. Also in Emilia Romagna, churches, abbeys, monasteries and bell towers in some dioceses will enjoy public grants. The bulk of the funding concerns the Abbey of the Mount of Cesena (€2.9 million). Then there are €15 million for the restoration of the historic Superga Basilica complex in Turin and €2 million for restoration work on St. Mark's Basilica in Venice.
