The alternative to Elon Musk's Starlink will be a European alliance that is expected to involve space champions on the Old Continent. At the starting line will initially be Italy's Leonardo and France's Thales and Airbus. The plan, which is still being finalized, would be codenamed "Project Bromo", after the name of an Indonesian volcano, and the model, as confirmed by Leonardo CEO Roberto Cingolani, should be that of MBDA, the satellite manufacturer owned by Leonardo (25%), Airbus (37.5%) and Bae Systems (37.5%). Negotiations for the European space alliance are still ongoing: "technical tables are at work, but there is still a lot to be done," Cingolani said. The companies involved are expected to combine their satellite assets to counter the power of Starlink, which has gained a strong position in low Earth orbit.
