In 2023, 13.9 million tonnes of packaging waste were generated, while up to 10.4 million tonnes were recycled. As a result, the actual recycling rate is 75.3% (up from 70.7% in 2022), ranking Italy among the most virtuous countries in the European Union. This is the major figure in the Conai report, which is published annually and assesses progress in the delicate field of packaging recycling, where economic activity and environmental protection coexist. Waste recovery, treatment, and the reintroduction of secondary raw materials into the market resulted in the preservation of 11.7 million tons of primary material. In 2023, 428 thousand tons of steel packaging were recycled, a 2.4% increase from 2022, with a recovery percentage of 87.8% (the EU target for 2030 is 70%). An additional 59 thousand tons of aluminum packaging were given a new life, with a recovery rate of 70.3% (the EU target is 50%). Paper waste, which weighed 4.6 million tonnes (+7.9%), achieved the highest recycling value at 92.3% (compared to an EU target of 75% by the end of the decade).
