The Milan Public Prosecutor's Office has concluded investigations against legal representatives of Meta Platforms Ireland Limited, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, for alleged tax evasion in excess of €887 million. The announcement was made by prosecutor Marcello Viola via a press release. Audits conducted by the Guardia di Finanza revealed that Meta allegedly failed to file VAT returns for the period 2015-2021. The company defended itself by arguing that users' free access to its social networks should not be subject to VAT. The investigation now paves the way for possible prosecution, with the tech giant likely to face significant legal and financial consequences in Italy.
