The Democratic Party wants to halt Elon Musk's potential expansion into Italy. Senators Antonio Nicita and Lorenzo Basso have brought forward two legislative proposals that would regulate the activities of Italy's Starlink satellite connectivity network. This initiative is timely, as the government is currently contemplating the implementation of these services to guarantee internet connectivity in the most isolated regions of the country. The move is part of a larger dispute between the South African entrepreneur and the Democratic Party, which culminated in some Dem MPs abandoning the X platform in recent weeks. "The risk - say the senators - is that our cybersecurity will be sold off, delivered into the hands of a foreign private company". Their stance is consistent with the European Union's strategy for technological independence in the satellite telecommunications sector. The senators' proposal aligns with the EU's Iris2 Project (Infrastructure for Resilience and Security by Satellite), a €10 billion initiative aimed at creating a European alternative to Starlink. This project, with €6 billion in public funds and €4 billion in private investments, has been entrusted to the SpaceRise consortium, composed of Eutelsat, Hispasat, and SES.
