In 2023, Italy had the greatest motorization rate in the European Union, with 694 automobiles registered per 1,000 people, compared to an EU average of 571. Furthermore, when compared to the other main economies in the Union, this indicator in Italy not only has much higher values but has also shown more consistent growth in recent years (by 1.3% per year since 2018, compared to 0.7% in Germany, 0.4% in Spain, and 0.3% in France). This was observed by the National Institute of Statistics, which also notes that petrol vehicles remain the most prevalent in Italian cities (47.4% in the capital municipalities as a whole), even though their distribution has been declining by an average of 0.8 points annually since 2015. The share of diesel cars (35.2%) has been declining even slower, by 0.3 percentage points every year since 2015. However, the percentage of diesel cars remained substantially greater in the South's capitals (41.7%, compared to 31.4% in the North and 33.8% in the Center) and medium-small cities (38.9% in provincial capitals, compared to 31.4% in metropolitan capitals).
