The Vatican has recently received the most recent Migrantes report regarding the right to asylum. The paper noted a significant surge in forced migration, with over 120 million people fleeing war, violence, and climate change by 2023. The number of people in need of protection is expected to exceed 130 million by the end of 2024. The vast majority, approximately 69%, relocate to neighboring countries, with only a small percentage embarking on a lengthy and perilous trek to Europe. In fact, there were just over 520,000 irregular entries into Europe between 2023 and the first nine months of 2024, while over 1.5 million asylum applications were filed during the same time period. Conflicts between Ukraine and Russia, as well as the Middle East war, exacerbate the situation, while the EU's "new" Migration Pact effectively limits the rights of refugees and asylum seekers. As a result, the Church has issued a new call to international governments to step up their efforts to protect refugees.
