Volunteers from Telefono Amico Italy are preparing to spend Christmas on the phone with those who are lonely. Once again this year, in fact, the volunteer organization will keep its telephone listening service active throughout Christmas and Boxing Day night to stand by all people who need emotional support during these festive days. In 2023, more than 620 people contacted Telefono Amico Italia, an average of one every 6 minutes. During Christmas 2023, 629 people contacted Telefono Amico Italy. Men and women contacted Telefono Amico Italia in equal numbers. Regarding age, predominantly adults aged 56-65 (22%), 46-55 (21%), and 36-45 (20%) called. The most common problem reported was loneliness, the need for companionship (31%), followed by existential issues (11%) and difficulties in family relationships (10%). "Most people who turn to us, especially during the holidays, do so out of loneliness," comments Cristina Rigon, President of Telefono Amico Italia, "and they do so using the telephone, the tool that, thanks to the warmth of the voice, manages to give an immediate sense of closeness to others. We often don't think about it, but Christmas, which for most people is the time to find friends and family, for those who are alone is the time when the weight of this loneliness becomes more oppressive or burdensome”.
