A true revolution in medicine: the world's first totally beating-heart transplant from a still-heart donor has been performed in Padua. The procedure, performed at the Azienda Ospedale-Università di Padova, was carried out by the Complex Operative Unit of Cardiac Surgery, headed by Professor Gino Gerosa. The patient is doing well, and the hospital stresses the importance of this new technique. "This is a revolution," they explain, "that will improve the results of cardiac transplantation from a still-heart donor. The procedure avoids controlled arrest of the heart, eliminating ischemia and reperfusion damage during both harvesting and transplantation. This ensures faster recovery of cardiac function and improves postoperative performance”
