A RAI crew has recently arrived in the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina to film a documentary commemorating the 150th anniversary of the beginning of Italian immigration to the country. In 2024, commemorative events were held to honor the arrival of the transatlantic vessel Sofia on February 21, 1874, with almost 300 migrants from Trentino, Friuli, and Veneto. Laguna was the initial location for the documentary's production, which will investigate the cultural legacy of the Italian community in the area. The troupe visited the Anita Garibaldi Museum and interviewed the mayor of Laguna, Adílcio Cadorin. Cadorin is a historian and scholar of Anita Garibaldi, a major person in the city's history and tied to the hero of the two worlds. In the coming days, the initiative will expand to other cities in Santa Catarina, with the goal of documenting evidence of Italian influence in the local social and cultural fabric. The documentary will be released in March 2025, coinciding with the conclusion of the 150th anniversary celebrations of Italian migration to Brazil.
