"Alcohol-free wines? Why not". This is what Marquis Piero Antinori, possibly the most famous Italian winemaker, claims. "Let's be clear right away - explains Antinori - I don't see it as an option for our company or our productions, but for Italian wine, yes. It represents a fast-expanding segment of the international market. If we Italians do not respond, others will, but, above all, alcohol-free or low-alcohol wines can represent a potential for sustainability in the Italian vineyard". Economic sustainability? "Certainly. It’s still a beverage made from grapes, so it could provide a solution for surplus production of common wines that struggle to find a market. This way, we could avoid the uprooting of vineyards—a measure some are calling for—which would impoverish areas of the country where there are no viable alternatives to viticulture. In these areas, uprooting vineyards would lead to economic decline, depopulation, and a loss of a fundamental component of the Italian landscape. This is why I consider this possibility favorably. To be honest, I would have preferred that these alcohol-free products not be named 'wine'. But it was determined to enable them to do so, so I request that at least a clear definition be supplied on the label: that they be named dealcoholized or dealcoholized wines with characters and sizes to ensure unequivocal information to the consumer".
