Italy's healthcare workforce is facing increasingly difficult challenges. With an ever-decreasing number of professionals, many of them on fixed-term contracts, the sector is facing 22% lower salaries than their colleagues in many European countries. Making matters worse is an increasingly aggressive work environment that often results in violence. These factors contribute to a high burnout rate among physicians, with 52% experiencing chronic work-related stress, and among nurses, where the rate is as high as 45%. Against the backdrop of these issues, the Health and the NHS Report by the Health, Legality, and Welfare Observatory of the Enpam Foundation and Eurispes also highlights major technological innovations that could transform the sector, such as Artificial Intelligence. However, the reorganization of healthcare envisioned by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) seems to be a necessary step to respond to the serious difficulties of the health workforce and improve the efficiency of the system.
