During the exchange of Christmas greetings with the highest offices of the state, President Sergio Mattarella emphasized the necessity of honoring and safeguarding national unity, as well as the Constitution's current relevance. "Respecting national unity means living the Constitution in its current form, with its foundational values as a steadfast guide: freedom, equality, justice, solidarity, and the inalienable rights of every individual," stated the President. Mattarella emphasized that certain national interests, such as the defense and security of citizens, respect for international treaties and alliances, and strategic infrastructures, necessitate the highest degree of convergence between institutions. The President also voiced concern about the growing phenomena of abstentionism, which has defined Italian electoral rounds for years, emphasizing the importance of countering this trend to ensure full democratic participation.
