The Italian icebreaker ship Laura Bassi has left the port of Littleton, New Zealand, setting course for Antarctica, with 27 researchers and 23 crew members on board. Thus begins the ship's mission planned for Italy's 40th expedition to Antarctica. The ship of the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics left Italy in mid-October and, after about 60 days of sailing, reached New Zealand via the Panama Canal. The icebreaker will sail a total of three months in Antarctic waters, to carry out research activities planned under six projects in addition to activities in collaboration with the Navy's Hydrographic Institute and support and logistics to the Italian Base in Antarctica "Mario Zucchelli". The return to New Zealand is scheduled for March 7, while the return to Italy is expected in the second half of April.
