The Italea Project, a roots tourism promotion initiative developed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation as part of the NRRP and funded by NextGenerationEU, was presented on December 18 at the Italian Cultural Institute in Munich. Italea's objective is to encourage Italians who reside abroad and Italian-descendants who are interested in re-discovering the traditions and locations of their ancestry by providing services that simplify the process of planning a travel to Italy. According to the Director General for Italians Abroad, Luigi Maria Vignali, the project aims to involve new generations: "It’s important to make them understand that roots tourism isn’t just about visiting relatives but also about discovering culture, gastronomy, traditions, and a unique Italian lifestyle". The event featured speakers including Italy's Consul General in Munich, Sergio Maffettone, national project coordinator Marina Gabrieli, and regional coordinators from Basilicata, Friuli Venezia Giulia, and Sicily. Everyone emphasized the cultural and emotional significance of the initiative, which was established to help roots travelers connect with their family and territorial heritage. The 20 regional groups play an important role in the initiative by providing information, hospitality, and assistance to make the experience accessible and memorable. Munich, with its large Italian community, confirms its status as a vital hub for promoting this important initiative.
