The European Union has approved the initiative to develop an electricity interconnector capable of connecting Italy to North Africa by 2030. The Medlink project, conceived and developed by Zhero—a company founded in 2022 by Marco Alverà, Alessandra Pasini, Paddy Padmanathan, and Enrico Vitali—takes a further step forward following Brussels' decision to include it in the strategic projects list “Global Gateway 2025.” Medlink entails a total investment of around €7 billion, with plans to build a 2-gigawatt power interconnector that will link Europe to green energy production on the opposite shore. Part of this energy will be exported to Europe via the peninsula. By doing so, the Italian energy system will serve as the energy transit center, which will also contribute to the enhancement of European energy security. The project has also been presented to major international financial institutions such as the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the World Bank, which have expressed interest in its systemic value.
