In Italy, nearly 4 out of 10 employees are hired on part-time contracts: 747,468 out of 1,870,992 in the third quarter of 2024, accounting for 39.95%. The prevalence of part-time work has slightly increased among fixed-term hires (38%) while remaining essentially stable for permanent contracts (32%). The economic slowdown is evident in the labor market: between January and September 2024, private sector hires totaled 6,221,000, marking a slight decline compared to the same period in 2023 (-1.7%). The sectors that contributed the most to employment growth are accommodation and catering (+91,940), professional services (+76,838), commerce (+74,092), and construction (+44,276). Conversely, the textile, clothing, and footwear industries saw job losses. This snapshot comes from the INPS Labor Market Observatory, which also highlights a 7% increase in dismissals for economic reasons.
