2024 was a year of great success for Italian sport, including for coaches working outside of Italy. Carlo Ancelotti is a standout figure who concluded a new successful season by winning the Champions League and the Spanish La Liga with Real Madrid. The Italians also made an impression at Euro 2024, with as many as five coaches involved. In addition to Spalletti, the Italian national team's coach, Calzona (Slovakia), Montella (Turkey), Rossi (Hungary), and Tedesco (Belgium) were there. Stefano Cusin, however, performed the biggest success when he led the tiny Comoros Islands to a historic qualification for the African Cup of Nations. Even at the club level, Italian excellence is evident, with coaches such as Maresca (Chelsea), De Zerbi (Marseille), and Farioli (Ajax) establishing themselves internationally. The latest addition to the list of Italian coaches abroad is Fabio Cannavaro, who was appointed by Dinamo Zagreb and reunited in Croatia with his friend Gattuso (Hajduk Split) in a derby between World Cup champions. Italians are making their mark not only in soccer. Andrea Giani guided France's volleyball team to its second Olympic gold medal. Meanwhile, Massimo Barbolini, former assistant to Velasco, celebrated success in Paris before moving overseas to bring Italian expertise to the new professional league in the United States. In rowing, several Italian coaches contributed to the achievements of various nations: Antonio Colamonici from Naples with Romania, Antonio Maurogiovanni with Ireland, and Gianni Postiglione with Greece. Italy also stands out in fencing, with Sandro Cuomo of Naples on the side of the platform as his pupil Mohamed El-Sayed won Egypt's historic bronze medal. In basketball, Andrea Trinchieri coaches the Lithuanian team Zalgiris Kaunas, while Sergio Scariolo will remain Spain's head coach until 2028. Lastly, Swiss swimmer Noè Ponti, named athlete of the year, is trained by Roman coach Massimo Meloni. Another Roman, Aldo Corno, at 74, traveled to Mozambique to lead a women’s basketball team in the championship finals.
