With the solemn opening of the Holy Door at the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls on January 6, presided over by Cardinal James Michael Harvey, Archpriest of the Basilica and former Prefect of the Pontifical Household, the ritual of opening the Holy Doors in the four papal basilicas of Rome for the 2025 Jubilee was completed. The series began on December 24, 2024, when Pope Francis officially inaugurated the Jubilee in St. Peter's Basilica, saying, "This is the night when the door of hope opened wide to the world". On December 29, Cardinal Baldassare Reina opened the Holy Door of St. John Lateran, while on January 1, 2025, Cardinal Rolandas Makrickas, coadjutor Archpriest of the Basilica of St. Mary Major, presided over the ritual at St. Mary Major. On December 26, the Pontiff also opened a Holy Door at the Rebibbia prison, bringing the Jubilee message of hope to the inmates. With the opening at St. Paul’s, pilgrims can now pass through the Holy Doors of the papal basilicas, symbols of spiritual renewal and conversion, to receive the plenary indulgence. The Holy Doors were officially incorporated into the Jubilee ritual in 1540 by Pope Paul III. For those unable to travel to Rome, virtual participation is available via a webcam installed at the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica.
