Italian journalist Cecilia Sala, detained in Iran since December 19, has been released. The confirmation comes from Palazzo Chigi, which announced that the plane carrying Sala has departed from Tehran. "Thanks to intense diplomatic and intelligence efforts, our compatriot has been freed by Iranian authorities and is returning to Italy," reads the official statement. She is expected to arrive at Ciampino Airport around 3:30 PM. The director of Aise, Giovanni Caravelli, personally traveled to Tehran to bring her home.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her gratitude for the efforts that led to Sala's release. "The Prime Minister thanks all those who contributed to allowing Cecilia to reunite with her family and colleagues," reads the statement from Palazzo Chigi. Meloni also personally informed the journalist’s parents of her release. (Photo Credit Fondazione Circolo dei lettori)
