Once again Sicilian health care ends up in the crosshairs of criticism, and once again the family members of the victims are the ones denouncing the incident. This time the tragedy occurred at Palermo's Villa Sofia Hospital, where Giuseppe Barbaro, a 76-year-old man, died after a 17-day wait for surgery due to a shoulder fracture. The injury, resulting from a fall, occurred before Christmas, but his admission to the hospital was not followed by prompt surgery. The victim, according to family members, had been in excellent health prior to that time. Barbaro's death has deeply shaken his loved ones, who have decided to file a complaint with the relevant authorities. The case is already being investigated by the Palermo prosecutor's office, which will try to shed light on the cause of death and the alleged delay in treatment.
