There is a new axis connecting Venice to New York, specifically Greenwich Village and the Cannaregio sestiere. It is the opening of the bookshop and bistro Sullaluna, a very out-of-the-box Venetian eatery for the city (especially for its distinctly non-touristy proposition) that has recently opened a new location in New York. Opened in 2017 by Francesca Rizzi and Rodolfo Tonello, Sullaluna in Fondamenta de la Misericordia is a small bistro where you can also browse and buy books, with a wide range from books for children and teens to books about Venice. One sits among the books at the few tables (some even outside) sampling from a menu that features a cafeteria portion with pastries and slices of cake, then lunch proposals including wines, juices and plates of crostini, cheeses and vegan options (still a rarity for Venice). Some time ago Sullaluna opened its doors in New York's Greenwich Village at the behest of Fulgi and Eleonora, sons of Francesca and Rodolfo. The style and spirit of the independent Venetian bookstore are respected here as well, with a proposal of books from selected publishers and a distinctly Italian gastronomic offer, which starts in the morning and closes after dinner. Also at 41 Carmine Street we find a rich calendar of events that combines Italian and vegan cuisine with fresh ingredients, cafeteria and Lavoratti's chocolate.
