“Yesterday (Wednesday, January 8th, ed.) was a great day for the Italian system and for me: I have not experienced a greater emotion in these past two years than when I was able to call a mother and tell her that her daughter was coming home". Yesterday, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni addressed the press conference hosted by the Parliamentary Press Association and the National Council of the Order of Journalists at the Chamber of Deputies. Among the initial topics of the meeting was the release of journalist Cecilia Sala, detained in Iran. "The Abedini case is under technical and political investigation by the Ministry of Justice; it is an issue that must continue to be discussed with our American allies. The task is still complex; it was not completed yesterday", the Prime Minister added, stressing that "it was a complex work of diplomatic triangulation between Iran and the United States: there was no real turning point, but ongoing attention. The negotiations with Iran are diplomatic and intelligence-related; the government is bound by confidentiality in these matters, but we are prepared to return to Copasir if further engagement is desired. There are currently around 500 Italians in Iran, so we must proceed with extreme caution". The Starlink issue was also a key topic during the press conference: “I have never personally spoken with Elon Musk about these matters. I am not used to using my position to perform favors for friends, but I also refuse to accept that the problem is Musk's ideas. These are typical government interactions; we have dozens of companies that propose themselves, following which an investigation is conducted, and a conclusion is reached. I don’t understand the accusations that have been made. Even I am not entirely clear, because, on one hand, it’s about securing sensitive and delicate communications by engaging with the most technologically advanced entity in this field without public alternatives. And we will have to discuss the fact that Italy and Europe have not addressed these issues in a timely manner, so the alternative is to have no protection. It is a matter of selecting a solution from two possibilities, neither of which is the best one". “Elon Musk", Meloni continued, “is a very well-known and wealthy individual who expresses his opinions. That’s what we’re talking about. When it comes to danger and interference, I respond that I have seen plenty of wealthy individuals who express their opinions, often against me. The issue arises when they employ their resources to influence the political decisions of other nations, which Musk does not do. George Soros, for example, engages in this activity; however, when it occurred, I was informed that it is a practice of philanthropists. So, the issue is that Musk isn’t left-leaning". Regarding Ukraine, the Prime Minister stated, "I am willing to support the conditions that Ukraine is willing to accept. Russia has previously violated conditions it had agreed to, so the fundamental issue is the security conditions necessary for a just peace". She added: “In Ukraine, I do not foresee a disengagement, nor do I see it in Trump’s statements. He speaks of ‘peace through strength,’ and I have always maintained that the only way to work towards peace is to create a situation that makes it difficult for Russia, forcing them to sit at the negotiating table: today Russia controls 18% of Ukrainian territory, two years ago it controlled 17%. If we are discussing peace today, it is because I fear Russia has become somewhat bogged down. Trump has demonstrated his ability to use diplomacy and deterrence effectively, and I believe he will be able to do it again". As for the government, Meloni assured: “The word ‘reshuffle’ has been brought up since I took office, but I am generally not in favor. Salvini would make an excellent Minister of the Interior. He is right to say that, without the judicial proceedings we saw, he would have asked for and obtained the Interior Ministry. But today, we have an excellent Minister of the Interior, so this matter is not on the agenda".
