The Beyond EPICA - Oldest Ice project, which is coordinated by the Institute of Polar Sciences of the National Research Council and funded by the European Commission, has obtained a historic result in the field of climate science during its fourth Antarctic campaign. A group of scientists has successfully extracted ice samples from a depth of 2,800 meters, reaching the rock beneath the Antarctic ice sheet. These ice samples could provide vital facts about the history of Earth's climate and environment, expanding our knowledge beyond the 800,000-year threshold and providing a continuous record of our climate dating back to 1.2 million years ago, if not further. The objective of the initiative is to resolve one of the most intricate mysteries in the field of climate science.
