The famous ski resort of Cervinia, in the municipality of Valtournenche, is ready to take back the historic name of Breuil-Cervinia. The Aosta Valley Regional Council has given a favorable opinion to the proposal put forward by the City Council, which aims to replace the name ‘Le Breuil’, introduced in December 2023 and at the center of national controversy. According to the reasons expressed by the Valtournenche City Council, the toponym Breuil-Cervinia has been the distinctive brand name of the resort for more than 50 years, used in all advertising campaigns and tourist information. “In the field of tourism, the name is known worldwide,” the note reads, "and represents an important attraction not only for our municipality, but for the entire Aosta Valley. In 2023, the name change to "Le Breuil" had sparked wide discussion, with criticism related to the loss of a long-established identity. Initially, the City Council had underestimated the weight of these issues, but subsequent media resonance prompted local authorities to reevaluate the decision. The procedure for restoring the historic name encountered some difficulties in 2024, when the region had deemed an initial April 28 resolution incomplete. However, a subsequent review by the City Council made it possible to complete the process and arrive at the final go-ahead.
