Some 99% of seminarians - future priests of the Catholic Church - have a social profile. For 88% of candidates for the priesthood, "they can be useful tools for pastoral care" and "they plan to use them in their future ecclesial commitments". WhatsApp (96.2%), Facebook (74.2%), Instagram (70.8%), YouTube (67.5%), and TikTok (15.3%) are the platforms most inhabited online by seminarians in Italy. From a quantitative point of view, almost one in three seminarians (28.7%) register up to 400 followers in their most followed profile; 16.7%, on the other hand, can count on a network of more than a thousand people online. But their web presence is inversely proportional to their willingness to express themselves publicly on social media: 26.8% say they never post content on social media. 31.1% publish a post or story only once or twice a month. This is an uncertain presence, sharing other people's content rather than self-published content, and where posting selfies is higher than posting videos. This is why 64.4% of future presbyters feel the need for specific training in the digital environment and tools, asking that social media training be included in the seminary curriculum.
