The Minister of Education, Giuseppe Valditara, has presented the new guidelines for the first cycle of education, targeting students aged 3 to 14 years. The reform seeks to improve linguistic and historical skills, beginning with Italian, and includes various novelties. One of the most significant changes is the ability to study Latin beginning in seventh grade in order to deepen one's understanding of Italian. Geo-history will be eliminated in high schools, replaced by a narrative approach focusing on the history of Italy, Europe, and the West. More emphasis will be placed on literature, grammar, and writing, with exercises such as memorizing poetry and nursery rhymes from elementary school. "The goal is to combat functional illiteracy and develop a love for reading and writing", Valditara stated. The plan also calls for music instruction to begin in first grade. The debate over the new guidelines will continue until March, with implementation set for the 2026-27 school year.
