A Memorandum of Understanding between Italy and Saudi Arabia was signed in Riyadh. It was signed during a meeting by Italian Minister of the Environment and Energy Security Gilberto Pichetto Fratin and Saudi Arabia's Minister of Energy Abdulaziz Bin Salman Al Saud. The text will be valid for five years and aims to strengthen cooperation on energy transition and security, taking into account the Paris goals and the 2030 Agenda. The main focuses of the memorandum include renewable energy, methane emission reduction, electricity interconnections, renewable and low-emission hydrogen, its renewable and low-carbon derivatives such as ammonia, and CO2 capture, storage and utilization systems. The agreement also aims to foster joint projects in third countries, involving national industrial supply chains. “Italy,” Pichetto Fratin stressed, "is consolidating its role as an energy hub and bridge between Europe and Africa, with mutually beneficial partnerships based on the strategic role of renewable energy and hydrogen. The minister also announced an immediate and concrete operational follow-up with Italy's decision to designate a permanent representative of the Ministry of Environment to the International Energy Forum.
