In December, the inflation rate was confirmed as +1.3% year on year. Overall, Istat reports that consumer prices in 2024 grew by an average of 1.0%, compared to the record 5.7% average in 2023. This drop is mainly due to the decrease in energy prices compared to the peaks of the previous year. With inflation at this level, the National Consumer Observatory (O.N.F.) estimates an annual impact of +€409.50 per average family. However, it is important not to overestimate optimism: the possibility of further growth in energy costs weighs on these projections, with prices of regulated energy commodities rising from +7.4% to +12.7% in 2024, with considerably bigger increases expected in 2025. A trend that, as in the past, could have an impact on the overall price trend: the Observatory estimates a sting of +914.04 euros per year per household for 2025. An increase that will be unsustainable for numerous families, whose budgets have already been challenged by the continuous price increases that have been observed in recent years. In the absence of adequate measures to counteract the new increases, prevent speculative phenomena, and support families, this trend will only exacerbate difficulties, hardship, and inequality, forcing families to make new sacrifices and triggering a downward spiral for the entire economic system.
