There’s very little snow in the Alps. According to the most recent estimates from January 10, the snow deficit in Italy is 63% lower than the average for the same period from 2011 to 2023. December was equally critical. The Apennines fared slightly better, with decent and recent snowfalls, but temperatures were warmer. According to the experts, it was "ephemeral snow". In absolute terms, today's "snow stocks" in Italy total 1 billion and 700 thousand cubic meters of snow, compared to 4.6 of the 2011-23 average, about a third of the usual level. And half compared to January of last year, when there were 3.2. The situation is especially dire in the Alps. The ski slopes held up since the temperatures were relatively low. And the artificial lakes, which have increased in number over the years, have done their job by providing fake snow. However, the future is not looking well. Despite relatively chilly temperatures, the North is experiencing little precipitation, which is limiting the creation of the snowpack.
