2024 confirmed in Italy the positive dynamics of the previous year, with new openings that allowed Data Centers in our country to reach an energy power of 513 MW IT (i.e., considering only the data rooms of the infrastructures), an increase of +17% compared to 2023. In particular, growing above the national average is the city of Milan, which contributes 238 MW IT to the total (+34% compared to the previous year). These numbers place the Lombard capital at a strategic advantage over other emerging cities in the sector in Europe. Findings emerged from research by the Data Center Observatory of the Politecnico di Milano, one of more than 50 different research strands of the Digital Innovation Observatories of the Politecnico di Milano (www.osservatori.net) that address all the key issues of Digital Innovation in businesses and Public Administration. 2024 can be defined as the year of the final realization of the importance of Data Center infrastructures for the country: 5 billion euros have already been spent in the two-year period 2023-2024 on building, equipping and filling IT servers of new Data Center infrastructures, while an additional 10.1 billion euros are planned for the two-year period 2025-2026. A growing number of new openings planned beyond 2026 are beginning to emerge in the background, which can further fuel the turnover of the Italian infrastructure supply chain.
