Italian tennis is experiencing a golden era. After an extraordinary 2024, crowned with a world number one ranking and victories in the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup, 2025 begins with another historic milestone: Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Sonego have qualified for the Australian Open quarterfinals. Sinner secured a convincing victory over Holger Rune in the round of 16, reaffirming his status as a world-class player, while Sonego achieved an exceptional milestone by defeating Tien and reaching the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career. This isn’t the first time two Italians have made it to the final eight in Melbourne. In 2022, Berrettini and Sinner had already achieved this milestone: Berrettini triumphed over Monfils in a grueling five-set match, while Sinner fell to Tsitsipas. A similar accomplishment occurred in the past, at the 1960 French Open, where Pietrangeli and Sirola both reached the semifinals. At Roland Garros, Italian duos also made their mark in 1948, 1956, and 1973, with players like Cucelli, Pietrangeli, and Panatta taking center stage. More recently, in 2024, Musetti and Sinner brought Italy to the forefront at Wimbledon, with Musetti reaching the semifinals and Sinner the quarterfinals.
