The Lega party has presented a bill to the Chamber of Deputies, first signed by Igor Iezzi, that seeks to prohibit the use of clothing that "hides the face", such as burqas and niqabs, not only for public order reasons, but also to protect the constitutional principle of "respect for the dignity of women". The document also includes the introduction of a new crime: "Coercion to hide the face". Anyone who forces another person to cover their face risks up to two years in prison, a fine of up to 30,000 euros, and banned from obtaining for Italian citizenship. The idea addresses concerns of personal freedom and women's rights, sparking a debate over how to balance security, culture, and respect for constitutional values.
