Jannik Sinner won the Australian Open, the first grand slam of 2025, Wednesday, defending the championship he won a year earlier. In the final at Rod Laver Arena, the ATP number one defeated German Alexander Zverev (ATP number two) in three sets, 6-3, 7-6, and 6-3. Sinner won the final in less than three hours, two and 42 minutes, never giving Zverev an opportunity to extend the match as the German continues his quest for a first career Grand Slam. Alexander Zverev, addressing Jannik Sinner, remarked: "Today I hoped to be more competitive and to have a chance, but you are the world’s number one and by far, you are too strong", he said after congratulating his rival and his staff and thanking his team and all the public. "I don't know if I will ever be able to win this trophy, but I am determined to come back and try again". Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is also satisfied, writing on social media: "A magnificent Jannik Sinner succeeds at the Australian Open 2025, defending his championship from last year. Third Slam for him, who not only adds to his personal stature but also brings enormous pride to Italy. Well done". Sinner, who also won the 2024 US Open, now has three slam titles in his career.
