An image "that should irritate us as Christians". Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, Archbishop of Bologna and President of the Italian Episcopal Conference (CEI), commented on the photo posted by the White House account depicting migrants in chains about to be deported. "There is a problem of dignity, respect, and attention to the other. We are losing humanity," Zuppi said during a dialogue in the Roman Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere with journalist Ferruccio De Bortoli as part of the Jubilee of Communication. Zuppi also spoke about war, the fragile truce in the Middle East and the release of Israeli female soldiers. “What is of great concern is hatred. We have to insist on the road of encounter, of dialogue. This also concerns doing journalism itself: if I tell a fact with humanity, I help to understand who the other person is. In hatred it becomes, instead, an enemy to be fought. As part of the Diocese of Bologna we went on pilgrimage to the Holy Land with the spirit not only to visit the places of veneration of Christ the Lord, but also to listen to the voices of those who are living that situation: I remember the mother of a hostage who thus addressed us: 'My suffering is that of everyone. And I don't want my suffering to produce more,'” he said.
