Due to an incurable and aggressive illness, it has been decided to give house arrest to Ernesto Fazzalari, the 'Ndrangheta boss arrested in Molochio in June 2016 when he was the most wanted fugitive after Matteo Messina Denaro. This was decided by the Bologna Supervisory Court after the Court of Cassation, upholding appeals by lawyer Antonino Napoli, annulled as many as three orders rejecting deferment of sentence or the granting of home detention, one issued by the L'Aquila Supervisory Court and two orders issued by the Bologna Supervisory Court, following Fazzalari's transfer to the diagnostic and therapeutic center of the Parma prison. Held for nine years under 41 bis, Ernesto Fazzalari had been sentenced to life in prison, a sentence later reduced to 30 years by the Court of Appeal of Reggio Calabria. Fazzalari was one of the protagonists of the feud that, at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s, turned Taurianova (RC) into the scene of one of the bloodiest clashes between the 'Ndrangheta gangs. Ernesto Fazzalari is one of the top members of the Avignone-Zagari-Viola gang. When he was captured by Carabinieri in the Gioia Tauro Plain, the boss had been wanted for more than 20 years and had been placed second, behind only Matteo Messina Denaro, on the list of the most dangerous fugitives. Subjected to hard imprisonment, during his detention he was diagnosed with a serious medical condition that led the defense, represented by lawyer Antonino Napoli, to request deferment of his sentence or home detention on the grounds that recent court rulings showed that Ernesto Fazzalari's operativeness as head of a 'Ndrangheta gang had not been concretely demonstrated in the period prior to his capture.
