TikTok and low-cost trips were to blame for transforming Roccaraso, in the Abruzzo National Park, into a kind of Dantesque circle on the weekend of Sunday 26 January, where ten thousand aspiring skiers and day-trippers, mostly from Naples and the province, found themselves, many arriving on 220 buses. As a result, thousands of people were stuck in traffic on State Road 17 for up to six hours, only long enough to have a packed breakfast, sip a coffee at the bar, take a photo in front of a pile of snow, and return home. Roccaraso has traditionally been a popular winter resort for Campanian skiers and those who enjoy getting away from town. It’s just a two-hour drive from Naples, which explains the crowds during the skiing season. However, last Sunday, the Alto Sangro area was invaded by a horde of hit-and-run visitors, a phenomenon the locals (called ‘Roccolani’) say has never been seen before.
