There are 250 lynx living in the Alps, but few in Italy. So it is news that a female lynx named Luna has been released in the forest of Tarvisio, an ancient wooded area located in the far northeast of Italy, in the province of Udine. Luna is the sixth lynx to be released in Italy since 2023. Of the previous five, three females and two males, only one male has remained in the Tarvisio area: one female has established her territory in the Slovenian Alps, where there is a larger population of lynx, and so has probably the other male; two other females have moved to Austria, where one was illegally killed. Introducing Luna to Tarvisio is intended to allow Flori, the male living in the area, to breed because after the lynx were moved in 2023 released there were no females left in the forest. In the nineteenth century hunting caused the extinction of lynx on most of the continent, with the exception of the Balkan and Carpathian mountain ranges, and the forests of Scandinavia. For the past few years, efforts have been underway to remedy this.
